Plan Your Trip to Bonito, Brazil: Where to Start
Bonito at Christmas and New Year: Crowds, Prices, Weather and Booking
The holiday season is Bonito's most crowded and expensive period, with strong heat and rain showers. Here is how to secure your tours and plan days that don't depend on the weather.
Updated September 24, 2026 · Guia de Bonito editorial team
Christmas and New Year are the busiest and most expensive time in Bonito, Brazil. In the local price-and-crowd calendar, December is rated “very high”, above even July. It is also the height of the Southern Hemisphere summer: strong heat, rain showers, green forest and waterfalls with more water. A holiday trip can be excellent, as long as you book early and leave slack in the itinerary for rain.
Weather over the holidays
| Item | What December and early January are like |
|---|---|
| Rain | rainy season (November to March), with showers |
| Air temperature | hot; summer days can exceed 35 °C |
| Water visibility | lower than in the dry season; can turn cloudy after storms |
| Waterfalls | full, with more volume |
| Water temperature | 21 to 24 °C, as the rest of the year (18 °C at the Anhumas Abyss) |
| Prices and crowds | very high |
The heat makes the water feel more pleasant than in winter, and you can leave the jacket at home. In exchange, bring a hat, a water bottle and sunscreen, which you may only apply after snorkeling tours.
Prices and crowds
The holiday season combines three things: Christmas and New Year celebrations, Brazilian summer school holidays, and the sports events the Bonito Tourism Department listed for December 2026, the Bonito 21K and Bonito Adventure. The result: tour vouchers at high-season rates, the year’s top accommodation prices and popular guesthouses full months ahead.
In Bonito, every tour is booked through a licensed local agency, which issues a voucher at a fixed price that is the same at every agency, with a high-season surcharge. The 2026 reference prices for each attraction are in Bonito travel costs. Add the Environmental Conservation Fee (TCA): R$ 15 per person, per day with a tour, paid on the official site turistapornatureza.com.br before the voucher is issued. It applies to foreigners too; children under 7 are exempt.
What to book first (and when)
Over the holidays, without a booking there are no spots on the main tours and often none in good guesthouses either. The order that works:
- Flights and accommodation, 90 to 180 days ahead. Flights to Bonito’s own airport change by season; check the dates on airline websites before booking anything else. See how to get to Bonito.
- High-demand tours, 60 to 90 days ahead: Rio da Prata, the Blue Lake Cave, the Anhumas Abyss and Nascente Azul. Pay the TCA for those days.
- Car or transfers, 30 to 60 days ahead. Bonito’s rental fleet is small and sells out in December; picking up a car in Campo Grande, the state capital, is an alternative.
- Other tours, about 30 days ahead.
- Christmas and New Year’s Eve dinners, as soon as your dates are set. Restaurants and guesthouses may run special events that require booking, and holiday opening hours change.
The full logic is in what to book first in Bonito. Ask for the cancellation policy in writing: in high season, the penalty-free cancellation window can be 15 to 20 days, and no-shows are usually charged in full.
What’s open and what changes
- Attractions. Most operate during the holiday season, which is precisely the peak of demand. What changes is opening hours on December 24, 25 and 31 and January 1. Don’t assume normal operation on those dates without confirmation from your agency.
- Lagoa Misteriosa is closed. Snorkeling and diving at Lagoa Misteriosa only run from April to October.
- Sucuri River and the Municipal River Beach usually close one day a week. If that day falls near a holiday, demand on the other days goes up.
- Light in the Blue Lake Cave. In December and January, in the first hours of the morning, a beam of light can fall on the lake. Ask for the first slot.
- Restaurants. Some close or change hours on the holidays. Check each place’s Instagram and book.
Planning around rain and heat
- Main tour mid-trip. Heavy rain can cloud a river for a few days. Book Rio da Prata on day two or three, never the last day, so there is time to reschedule.
- Ask about visibility before you leave. If the attraction cancels, the agency reschedules or refunds. Swap for a cave, Buraco das Araras or a waterfall.
- Waterfalls are the summer stars. Estância Mimosa, Parque das Cachoeiras and Boca da Onça carry more water from December to March.
- Snorkel early, rest in the hottest hours. On very hot days, use mid-afternoon for the guesthouse pool or a river beach.
- Have a plan B. Caves operate in the rain, and so does the evening snake talk at Projeto Jiboia. The full list is in Bonito on a rainy day.
New Year’s Eve in Bonito
Bonito is a small town and the celebration matches its size. The official 2026 calendar lists New Year’s Eve among December’s events, but the public program (venue, times, performers) is usually announced close to the date. Many visitors celebrate at guesthouse or restaurant parties, with tickets or reservations. If this matters to you, ask your accommodation what it offers before booking. The year’s events are in events in Bonito.
Many services start later on January 1. Avoid booking a long tour early that morning.
Common holiday-season mistakes
- Leaving accommodation until November. The most popular guesthouses are already full.
- Renting a car on arrival. The fleet is small and runs out.
- Forgetting the time zone. Mato Grosso do Sul is 1 hour behind Brasília and São Paulo. Check that flights and vouchers are in local time, including the midnight countdown.
- Counting on Lagoa Misteriosa. It is closed at this time of year.
- Skimping on sun protection. A hat, UV shirt and water make more difference than anything else in a December suitcase. See what to pack for Bonito.
The holidays or another time?
If your dates are flexible, compare. The clearest water and lower prices run from April to September, except July. If you like heat and full waterfalls but want to pay less, consider March, after Carnival, when demand drops to medium and the falls are still full. The month-by-month comparison is in best time to visit Bonito.

Frequently asked questions
Is it worth spending New Year's Eve in Bonito?
Yes, if you enjoy heat, full waterfalls and nature, and accept the highest prices of the year. Not if you want the clearest possible water or low prices: for that, May to September (except July) is a better choice. Without booking well ahead, a holiday-season trip is hard to pull off.
Does it rain a lot in Bonito in December?
December falls in the rainy season, which runs from November to March. Rain usually comes in showers, and the main effect for visitors is on the water: after a storm, rivers can stay cloudy for a few days and snorkeling tours may be rescheduled. Caves and waterfalls are less affected.
How far ahead should I book for the holidays?
Flights and accommodation 90 to 180 days ahead. The most sought-after tours, such as Rio da Prata, the Blue Lake Cave, the Anhumas Abyss and Nascente Azul, 60 to 90 days ahead. Rental cars also sell out in December: book early or pick one up in Campo Grande.
Do tours run on Christmas Day and New Year's Day?
Many attractions operate during the holiday season, but opening hours on December 24, 25 and 31 and January 1 may differ. Check each date with your agency before building the itinerary, and book dinners in advance.
Is Lagoa Misteriosa open over the holidays?
No. Lagoa Misteriosa only operates from April to October, because algae reduce visibility in the hot months. Over the holidays, choose another snorkeling tour, such as Rio da Prata, Sucuri River or Nascente Azul.
