Diving in Bonito, Brazil, means freshwater scuba diving in two very different settings: a lake inside a cave, at the Anhumas Abyss, and an open-air sinkhole of blue water, at Lagoa Misteriosa, in Jardim. It is not river diving: the river snorkeling tours use a snorkel and stay on the surface. The list below shows the diving tours registered in this guide.
Where you dive
Anhumas Abyss. 23 km from the town center. Access to the lake is through a crack in the rock and a 72-meter rappel, with a mandatory test the day before. In the lake, certified divers scuba dive among submerged limestone cones; everyone else snorkels. It is the most expensive and most sought-after tour in Bonito, with few places per day.
Lagoa Misteriosa. In Jardim, about 50 km away. A sinkhole of blue water with rock walls, and no rappel. The dive can be a try dive, for people who have never dived, or a certified dive, which goes deeper. The lagoon’s total depth is considerable and the section you visit depends on your level. There is also snorkeling for anyone who does not want to use a tank.

At the Anhumas Abyss, scuba diving is for certified divers only; anyone without certification does the tour with snorkeling in the lake, which is worth it in itself.
Who can dive
Diving requires a medical form, and the operator may turn away anyone with a heart, respiratory or ear condition. Pregnant women cannot dive. The minimum age is stated by the agencies and differs between try dives and certified dives; for minors, confirm before booking. If you are flying the next day, respect the interval between diving and flying, which affects the plans of anyone leaving early from Campo Grande.
How to book
Like every tour in town, diving is booked through an agency with a single voucher. The Anhumas Abyss must be booked weeks ahead at any time of year, and your itinerary needs two days in town: one for the rappel test and one for the tour.
