Bonito 4-Day Itinerary: The Ideal Format, Day by Day

If you read only one itinerary in this guide, read this one. Four full days in Bonito, Brazil, let you see the benchmark tours, include Jardim and still choose what to do with the last day, without stacking two tiring tours on the same date. It is the format we recommend for a first visit, and the basis of our digital itinerary.

The structure follows the rule of one direction per day. Each day below has a morning, an afternoon, driving distance and a rainy-day alternative.

Before you travel

• Book through an agency, with a single voucher, at least: the Blue Lake Cave in a morning slot, the Rio da Prata and, if you are doing it, the Anhumas Abyss. In July (Brazil’s winter school holiday), on Brazilian holidays and over Christmas and New Year, book everything.
• Choose accommodation in or near the center: agency transport leaves from there and the evening happens around the main square. See where to stay in Bonito.
• Arrive the previous afternoon. The road from Campo Grande takes 3 to 4 hours by car (4 to 5 hours by shared van/transfer).

Day before: arrival and river beach

Arriving from Campo Grande in the early afternoon, confirm your vouchers and go to the Municipal River Beach, 7 km from the center on the Formoso River. Transparent water, fish by the bank, a restaurant and lawns. There is no group time slot, so it works at any hour of the afternoon. In the evening, Projeto Jiboia, in the center, a presentation about snakes with supervised handling; it is the only fixed evening activity in town.

Day 1: Blue Lake Cave and Sucuri River

Morning. Blue Lake Cave, 21 km away, in the first or second slot. Morning light entering through the cave mouth is what gives the lake the saturated blue of the photos. A visit of about 1 hour 20 minutes, with about 300 steps down and back up. Closed shoes and a helmet are mandatory; there is no contact with the water.

Afternoon. Sucuri River, 19 km away, in the same direction. Lunch at the farm. The snorkel is about 1 hour in the water, with a gentle current and visibility that reaches tens of meters in the dry season. It is the best first river snorkel: short, clear and close.

Driving: about 40 km in total, without returning to the center.

If it rains: the cave does not depend on the weather. If the Sucuri is suspended because of cloudy water, São Miguel Cave, 17 km away, fills the afternoon, and the Sucuri moves to the afternoon of day 3.

Day 2: Jardim, with the Rio da Prata and Buraco das Araras

Morning. Early departure for Jardim, about 50 km to the south. The Rio da Prata is the most complete river snorkel in the region: a forest trail, a practice session at a spring and about 2 hours drifting down the river, with large dourado, piraputanga and pacu. Lunch at the farm, included or optional depending on the package.

Afternoon. Buraco das Araras, a few kilometers away: a sinkhole with vertical walls where red-and-green macaws nest. An easy trail around the rim, with two lookouts, about 1 hour 20 minutes. Late afternoon is the best time, with the macaws returning. Back to the center in the early evening.

Driving: about 110 km round trip, in one direction.

If it rains: the Rio da Prata may be suspended. Lagoa Misteriosa, also in Jardim (open only from April to October), clouds less and serves as a substitute snorkel. Buraco das Araras runs in light rain. Ask the agency to reorganize the day among the three.

If you are doing the Anhumas Abyss on day 4: the rappel test takes place the day before, at the operator’s base in the center. Arrange the test with the agency for the end of day 3, not today, because you get back late from Jardim.

Day 3: waterfall and a short second snorkel

Morning. Estância Mimosa, 25 km away: an easy forest trail past a sequence of waterfalls and swimming holes, about 4 hours, with lunch at the farm. It is the region’s best-balanced waterfall in effort and scenery, and works well with children.

Afternoon. Nascente Azul, 32 km away in the same direction: a short snorkel starting from a spring of intense blue, with river-beach facilities to stay on afterwards. Alternative: Parque das Cachoeiras, 18 km away, if you prefer more waterfall and less still water.

Late afternoon, if you are doing the Abyss: rappel test at the operator’s base, in the center. It takes about 1 hour.

Driving: about 60 km in total, in one direction.

If it rains: Estância Mimosa keeps the trail open in light rain. If Nascente Azul is suspended, the alternative is Aquário Natural, 8 km away, or an afternoon in town. See what to do when it rains.

Day 4: the choice that defines the itinerary

The last day comes in three versions. Choose by your profile.

Adventure version: Anhumas Abyss. A full morning at the Anhumas Abyss, 23 km away: a 72-meter rappel through a crack in the rock down to a lake inside the cave, snorkeling (or scuba diving for certified divers) and the climb back up the same rope. About 4 hours including preparation. It is the most expensive and the most memorable tour in town. Free afternoon to rest before the road.

Rest version: Praia da Figueira. A day at Praia da Figueira, 16 km away: a lake of transparent water with a deck, kayaks and gentle snorkeling inside the lake, a restaurant and shade. No trail, no time slot. It is the right choice for families and for anyone who ended day 3 tired.

Fun version: river tubing and Aquário Natural. Morning tubing on the Formoso River, running rapids in an individual inner tube, and afternoon at Aquário Natural, a gentle snorkel 8 km from the center. Both are close to town and leave time to depart in the late afternoon.

If you leave the same day: with any of the versions, leave Bonito by 1 pm to catch an evening flight from Campo Grande. In the Abyss version this is tight; better to stay one more night.

Without a car

Each day of this itinerary has a single direction, which reduces agency transport to one transfer per day. Get quotes like this: day 1 (west), day 2 (Jardim), day 3 (north, Bodoquena road) and day 4 according to the version you choose. The Jardim day is the most expensive for transport. The Municipal River Beach, Aquário Natural, river tubing and Projeto Jiboia are close to the center and can be done by taxi, which exists in town in small numbers (there is no Uber). With a car, the advantage is timing: reaching Buraco das Araras in the late afternoon without depending on the van, staying longer at Nascente Azul, leaving Praia da Figueira whenever you like. The disadvantage is driving on dirt roads, which get slippery after rain.

How much it costs

Reference prices quoted by agencies in September 2026, in Brazilian reais (BRL): tickets for the tours in this itinerary are the same at every agency under the single-voucher system and vary with the season. The main tours (Blue Lake Cave, Sucuri, Rio da Prata, Buraco das Araras, Estância Mimosa, Nascente Azul) fall in similar price ranges, with the exception of the Anhumas Abyss, which on its own costs more than two or three of them combined. The Abyss version is the most expensive; the Praia da Figueira version is the cheapest.

What to bring

Swimwear under your clothes from early morning, a towel, closed shoes that can get wet (mandatory at the cave and useful at every farm), flip-flops, sunscreen for out of the water, insect repellent for trails, water, photo ID and your voucher. Mask, snorkel, wetsuit and life vest are provided on the river tours; at the Abyss, all rappel equipment belongs to the operator. A dry change of clothes for the late afternoon and a plastic bag for your phone take care of the rest.

What was left out
