Bonito's tours are spread across three directions and up to 72 km from the center. Grouping them by region is what separates a good itinerary from an exhausting one.

Planning an itinerary in Bonito, Brazil, is a geography problem. The tours sit on farms spread across three directions, between 6 and 72 km from the town center, connected by dirt roads. Each tour has a time slot printed on your voucher. Choose the wrong combination and you spend the day in the car. This page explains the grouping logic and points to ready-made itineraries by number of days.
The rule: one direction per day
Leaving from the center of Bonito, the tours group like this:

The classic Bonito day is the Blue Lake Cave in the morning, with the best light, and the Sucuri River in the afternoon: 20 km in the same direction, without returning to the center. The Jardim day is the Rio da Prata in the morning and Buraco das Araras in the late afternoon, when the macaws return to the sinkhole. Bodoquena is Boca da Onça on its own, with lunch at the farm.
Driving time
Count 30 to 40 minutes from the center to the western tours, 1 hour to Jardim and 1 hour to Bodoquena. Dirt roads in good condition in the dry season; slower in the rain. Agencies that provide transport have this worked out and usually leave between 7 and 8 am for morning tours.
Arriving and leaving via Campo Grande
Almost everyone arrives via Campo Grande, the state capital about 300 km away, a drive of 3 to 4 hours by rental car (4 to 5 hours by shared van/transfer). That shapes the structure of the itinerary:
- Arrival day: if you leave Campo Grande in the morning, you reach Bonito at lunchtime. The afternoon is for a river beach near the center, collecting your vouchers at the agency and, in the evening, Projeto Jiboia.
- Departure day: if you are returning to Campo Grande the same day, you can do a half-day tour in the morning and leave after lunch. If you have a late-afternoon flight, leave Bonito by 1 pm.

What to book in advance
Every tour requires a single voucher issued by an agency. Three things should be locked in before you travel, at any time of year: the Anhumas Abyss (places are counted and there is a test the day before), the Rio da Prata (the most sought-after) and the Blue Lake Cave in a morning slot. In high season, book everything in advance. River beaches, Aquário Natural and Projeto Jiboia can be decided in town.

Time of year
Between May and September the rivers are at their clearest and rain rarely interferes: any order of tours works. Between December and March, put the main river snorkels on the second and third days so you have room to rebook if it rains, and keep the Blue Lake Cave as the wildcard for a bad day. Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need for a Bonito itinerary?
Three full days of tours is the minimum to see a river snorkel, a cave and a waterfall. Four days is the format we consider ideal, with Jardim included. With five, you add Bodoquena and Boca da Onça; with seven, a rest day and the Anhumas Abyss without rushing.
Is it better to plan the itinerary myself or let the agency do it?
Both. Arrive with an idea of which tours you want and on which days, based on the regional logic on this page, and ask the agency to adjust time slots and transport. Since ticket prices are the same everywhere, the agency adds value precisely in putting the itinerary together.
Do I need a car to follow these itineraries?
No. All of them work with agency transport, charged per tour or per day. With your own car you gain flexibility on timing and save on transport, but the dirt roads to the attractions demand care, especially in the rain.
Can I include Jardim and Bodoquena in the same itinerary?
Yes, but on different days. Jardim is to the south and Bodoquena to the north, each about 50 to 60 km away. Each takes a full day. With 5 days you can do both; with 3 or 4, choose Jardim, which has the Rio da Prata and Buraco das Araras.
In what order should I do the tours?
Start with the ones that depend least on weather and water, such as the Blue Lake Cave, and keep the most important river snorkels for the middle of the trip, when there is still room to rebook if it rains. Leave river beaches and short tours for the day you arrive and the day you leave.
