How to Get to Bonito, Brazil: Flights, Transfers, Car and Bus

There are three ways to get to Bonito, Brazil: a direct flight to the town’s own airport, a flight to Campo Grande followed by about 300 km by road (transfer or rental car), or overland by car or bus. Most visitors use the second option, because Campo Grande has far more flights. The direct flight to Bonito, when it exists on your date, is the one that saves the most time.

Flying to Bonito (BYO)

Bonito has its own regional airport, Aeroporto Regional de Bonito, code BYO, about 13 km from the center. Flight service is limited and changes by season: historically, commercial flights come from São Paulo, with more frequency in July and on Brazilian holidays. Airlines, routes and days of operation change from one year to the next, so check the airlines’ websites before planning around this option.

Flying to Campo Grande (CGR) + road

This is the standard route. Campo Grande International Airport receives daily flights from Brazil’s main cities, and from there it is about 300 km to Bonito on paved highways. You have four ways to cover that stretch:

Shared transfer

Vans and minibuses with several departures a day, timed to the busiest flights. They leave from the airport and drop you at your guesthouse in Bonito. The trip takes 4 to 5 hours, with a snack stop. Private transfer

A car or van just for your group, at your flight time. It is charged per vehicle, so it pays off from 3 or 4 people, or when your flight lands outside the shared transfer’s schedule.

Rental car

Rental companies operate at Campo Grande airport. By car, the drive takes 3 to 4 hours. The most used route leaves on the BR-060 to Sidrolândia, continues on the MS-345 toward Nioaque and joins the MS-178 to Bonito; there is also a variant via Guia Lopes da Laguna. The entire route is paved. At night, watch for animals on the road, which are common on the highways of Mato Grosso do Sul. Bus

Intercity bus routes link Campo Grande and Bonito with a few departures a day, leaving from the city’s bus station (rodoviária), not from the airport. It is the cheapest option, but it means getting from the airport to the bus station, and the trip is longer because of the stops. It works well for anyone who lands in Campo Grande in the morning and is in no hurry.

Driving from other cities

Bonito is in the southwest of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, near the border with Paraguay. The distances below are approximate, by highway, and serve to estimate travel time. All the main routes are paved.

Drivers coming from São Paulo or the state of Paraná generally enter Mato Grosso do Sul via Presidente Prudente or Naviraí and pass through Dourados or Campo Grande. From Foz do Iguaçu, the route follows the BR-163 to Dourados and then crosses via Maracaju and Guia Lopes da Laguna. On any long route, avoid driving at night: beyond fatigue, there are animals on the road and unlit stretches.

The center of Bonito is compact and walkable. If you come by transfer, it drops you at your guesthouse; by bus, the bus station is a few minutes from the center.
