Bonito for Couples: Itinerary, Tours for Two, Lodging and Dinner

Bonito, Brazil for two is a nature trip, not a hotel trip. Anyone arriving with visions of a beach resort and candlelit dinners every night will be disappointed; anyone arriving to spend the day in crystal-clear rivers and return to a quiet guesthouse in the late afternoon will find what they came for. What to expect, without illusions

Three facts shape the trip:

1. Tours are in groups. Every outing has a guide and, at most attractions, other people in the same time slot. Private departures exist at some agencies, for a higher price, but they are not the norm.
2. The day starts early. Vans leave between 7 and 8 am. That means early nights and planning dinner around them.
3. The town closes early. The main street is lively until about 10 or 11 pm. Bars stay open later, but do not expect clubbing.

The upside: outside the tours, there is plenty of time for two, and nature does the work that expensive restaurants do in other destinations.

Tours that work best for two

River snorkeling. This is Bonito’s central experience and it works well as a couple: you float side by side, in silence, down a river with visibility of tens of meters. Rio da Prata is the longest and most sought after; the Sucuri River is shorter and closer to town; Nascente Azul combines snorkeling with a river beach and an afternoon in the water. Anhumas Abyss. A 72-meter rappel descent to a lake inside a cave, followed by snorkeling or scuba diving. A river beach with no schedule. An afternoon at a river beach near town, with no guide and no van, is the break a couple’s itinerary calls for. The Balneário Municipal is the easiest to fit in.

Waterfalls. Boca da Onça and Estância Mimosa are full days of trails and swims. They reward couples who like walking; for anyone who just wants to rest, one waterfall is enough.

Lodging

For two, lodging is the item that most sets the trip apart, because the tours are the same for everyone. Two paths:

• A small pousada (guesthouse) in the center, on a side street, for anyone who wants to walk to dinner and not depend on transfers.

Dinner and evenings

The main street concentrates the restaurants: river-fish houses with dishes for two, churrascarias (Brazilian grill houses), pizzerias and ice-cream shops. Honeymoon

Bonito is a good honeymoon destination for couples who love nature and accept the rhythm. Three adjustments make a difference:

• Low season. April to June and August to October have clear water, fewer people on the tours and availability at the lodges. July and the year-end holidays are packed, and the sense of calm is lost.
• Better lodging than usual. A chalet with a veranda or bathtub, an on-site restaurant, silence. Mention the occasion when booking.
