Bonito on a Budget: How to Spend Less Without Spoiling the Trip

Bonito, Brazil has a reputation for being expensive, and the reputation has a basis: the ticket for a river snorkeling tour costs the equivalent of several nights in a simple guesthouse, and the price is the same at every agency. But the bill is not fixed. What determines how much you spend is the number of paid tours, the transport to reach them and the time of year. Understand where the cost comes from

On a typical four-day trip for two people, the tours and the transport to reach them are usually the biggest block of the budget, followed by lodging, food and getting to Bonito. That changes the strategy: dropping one river snorkeling tour saves more than changing guesthouses, and choosing transport wisely can be worth a night’s stay.

Where you can genuinely save

1. Low season

This is the decision that matters most. From April to June and from August to November, outside Brazilian holidays, nightly rates fall, some attractions charge cheaper tickets, there are no minimum-stay requirements and tours have availability. 2. One river snorkeling tour, not three

River snorkeling is the tour that defines Bonito, and also the most expensive of the everyday tours. Anyone doing three snorkeling tours in four days spends a lot to see variations on the same kind of river. Choose one good one, such as Rio da Prata or the Sucuri River, and complete the itinerary with caves, river beaches and a sightseeing tour, which cost less and show you other things.

3. River beaches

The river beaches (balneários) are the cheapest outings in the region and fill a whole afternoon: river, shade, kiosks, sometimes a zipline and a trail. The Balneário Municipal, a few kilometers from the center, is the most accessible and does not require an agency van. 4. Group tours by direction

Agencies charge transport per tour or per day, and the tours lie in opposite directions. Two tours in the same direction on the same day (for example, Rio da Prata and Buraco das Araras, both toward Jardim) cost one drive instead of two. 5. Shared transfer or a shared car

Solo or as a couple without a car, the agency’s shared transport is the cheapest way to reach the tours. From three people, a rental or your own car usually works out cheaper than per-tour transport, and it also opens up the river beaches and lodging outside the center. 6. Hostel, camping or a simple guesthouse

The center has hostels with dorms and private rooms and a shared kitchen, and there are campsites in town and at some river beaches. A simple pousada (family-run guesthouse) on a side street, without a pool, does the job of sleeping and leaving early. 7. Cook and eat simply

A hostel or guesthouse with a kitchen lets you handle breakfast and dinner for a fraction of restaurant prices. In town, pay-by-weight buffets and the prato feito (a set plate of rice, beans, protein and salad) at lunch, and sobá (the region’s Japanese-Brazilian noodle soup) or a shared pizza at dinner, come in well below à la carte restaurants. 8. Arrive for less

What is not worth cutting

• The main river snorkeling tour. It is the reason to go to Bonito. A trip of only river beaches and caves saves money but leaves out what is unique to the region.
• Water and water shoes. Water at the attractions costs more, and water shoes or trainers you can get wet prevent cuts on the rocks. Buy them before you travel.
• A margin for rescheduling. If it rains hard and the river clouds over, the tour is rescheduled. An itinerary with one free day lets you reschedule without losing the ticket.
• Road and timing. Saving money by driving tired or overnight on a highway with animals on the road is not worth it. The highway from Campo Grande to Bonito has unlit stretches.
• Booking ahead in high season. Trying to buy at the last minute to pay less does not work: the price is fixed and the places run out.
