Doing Bonito, Brazil by car pays off for groups of 3 or more, for anyone staying outside the center and for anyone who wants freedom with their schedule. For couples staying in the center and doing the main tours, agency transport gets the job done with less effort. A car gives flexibility and cuts the cost per person, but it puts you on dirt roads, in sun or rain, with animals on the road and stretches with no mobile signal.

When a car is worth it

- Lodging outside the center. Farm hotels and rural guesthouses, common in Bonito, are far from the restaurants. Without a car, you depend on the hotel.
- Freedom with your schedule. A river beach at the end of the afternoon, an earlier start for photos, a stop at a viewpoint on the way. With a car, the day does not end when the van goes back.
- Reshuffling for rain. If a river clouds over, you swap the order of the days without depending on a seat in a van.
- Already arriving by car. Anyone driving in from elsewhere in Brazil has no reason to leave the car parked.

Access to Boca da Onça and the waterfalls on the north side is what demands the most from car and driver: kilometers of dirt, with loose stones and dust in the dry season, mud and bogging in heavy rain. On a stormy day, ask the agency about conditions before setting out.

The Jardim axis is long but almost entirely paved, and the three attractions are close to each other. A full day in this direction is well spent.
Near the center
Balneário Municipal, Praia da Figueira, Balneário do Sol, Bonito Aventura, Ilha do Padre and the river tubing on the Formoso River are all within 16 km, on short drives, some with dirt. These are the ideal late-afternoon outings for anyone with a car.
Dirt roads: what to expect
Most of the region’s dirt roads are maintained and passable in an ordinary car, but their behavior changes with the weather:
- In the dry season (May to September): dust and washboard stretches (corrugations). Slow down and keep your distance from the car ahead.
- In the rainy season (December to March): mud, puddles and slippery stretches. Low cars get through, with care, but in a heavy storm some access roads turn bad for a few hours. Do not force your way through a bog.
- Loose stones: common on the access roads on the north side. Tires in good condition and a checked spare avoid a lost day.
- Signage: the attractions have signs at the farm entrances, but navigation apps do not always get the last stretch right. Download the map offline and, when in doubt, follow the attraction’s sign.
Precautions that make a difference
- Animals on the road. Cattle, capybaras, tapirs and anteaters cross highways and rural roads, especially at dusk. It is the main risk of driving in the region. Avoid driving at night and keep a moderate speed near forest and pasture.
- Fuel. Fill up in Bonito before heading out to the tours. There are no gas stations at the attractions, and the one in Jardim is the only alternative on the southern axis. A day with two distant tours can add up to 150 km.
- Mobile signal. It fails on most access roads. Agree on times beforehand and carry the voucher printed or saved on your phone.
- Voucher time slot. Leave with a margin: arriving late can mean losing your slot, and the attractions cannot always fit you in again.
- Rain and visibility. In heavy downpours, pull over and wait. Storms in the region are intense and short.
- Cleaning and return. The car comes back covered in dust or mud. Check the rental company’s cleaning rules for returns.
Parking at the attractions
The main attractions have parking at reception, almost always free or included in the ticket, with space for cars and vans. Since many operate inside working farms, the parking is at the farmhouse, and from there the tour continues on foot or in the attraction’s own vehicle. In the town center, street parking is straightforward, with spaces around the square and at hotels; check whether your guesthouse has covered parking or a courtyard.

Rent in Campo Grande, at the airport, where the major rental chains operate with a proper fleet and regular hours.
