The best time to visit Bonito, Brazil is the dry season, May to September, ideally May, June, August or September. In those months the rivers are at their clearest, it rarely rains, temperatures are mild and there are fewer visitors than in July, which is the busiest and most expensive month of the year. The rainy season, November to March, brings intense heat, afternoon downpours and fuller waterfalls, but river visibility can drop after storms.
There is no month when Bonito shuts down. The choice depends on what you value most: water clarity, waterfalls, price or heat. Note that Bonito lies in the Southern Hemisphere, so its summer runs from December to March and its winter from June to August.
Dry season (May to September)
This is the season most visitors prefer. The reasons:
- Clearest water. With little rain, the rivers receive no sediment and river snorkeling reaches its best visibility. This is the scenery in the photos you find online.
- Little rain. The risk of losing a tour to a storm is low, and itineraries rarely need to be reshuffled.
- Mild temperatures. Days range from pleasant to warm, nights are cool. Good for trails and for the Blue Lake Cave, which involves a long staircase down and up.
- Cold fronts. Between June and August, fronts pass through and knock temperatures down for a few days. River temperature does not change much, and snorkeling is done in a wetsuit, but climbing out of the water on a cold morning is unpleasant.
The downside is July. Brazil’s mid-year school holiday fills the town with families, lodging prices rise, the most popular tours sell out weeks ahead and the municipal river beach gets crowded. If July is your only option, book everything before you travel.
Rainy season (November to March)
Summer in Bonito is hot and humid. Rain usually comes as late-afternoon downpours rather than whole gray days, but storms do happen and can change the day.
- Intense heat. Getting into the river at 9 am becomes a relief, and river beaches come into their own.
- Full waterfalls. Boca da Onça, Estância Mimosa and the waterfalls of the Serra da Bodoquena carry more water.
- Visibility can drop. After heavy rain, rivers turn cloudy for a day or two and the attraction may suspend snorkeling and reschedule. Spring-fed rivers, such as the Sucuri, hold up better; rivers with larger catchment areas suffer more.
- Fewer people and lower prices, except in December, January and at Carnival.

Transition months (April and October)
April is the end of the rains: the water is already improving, the heat is easing and prices are still low-season. October and November mark the start of the rains, with rising heat and occasional storms. In both cases, visibility is usually good on most days, with a moderate risk of one lost day. These are good-value months with a little luck involved.

High season: when Bonito fills up
