Bonito 3-Day Itinerary: The Essentials, Day by Day

Three days is the most common format for Brazilians visiting Bonito over a long weekend. It is too little to see everything and enough to see what matters: a cave, two different river snorkels and the Buraco das Araras sinkhole. This itinerary assumes three full days, arriving the day before. If your arrival and departure happen within the three days, see the adjustment at the end.

The logic is that of the itinerary by region: one direction per day, without returning to the center between morning and afternoon.

Before you travel

• Book through an agency, under the single-voucher system, at least the Rio da Prata and the Blue Lake Cave in a morning slot. Outside low season, book everything.
• Ask the agency to group the tours exactly as below. If a time slot does not work, swap the whole day, not a single tour.
• Without a car, get transport quoted per day, not per tour: it is cheaper on days with two attractions.
• Arrive in Bonito the previous afternoon. The road from Campo Grande takes 3 to 4 hours by car (4 to 5 hours by shared van/transfer); details in how to get to Bonito.

Day before: arrival

Arriving in the afternoon, collect your vouchers at the agency (or confirm the digital ones) and, if there is time, go to the Municipal River Beach, 7 km from the center. It is the cheapest tour in town and an easy way to get into the water with no commitment. In the evening, Projeto Jiboia, in the center, is the only evening activity with a fixed schedule.

Day 1: Blue Lake Cave and Sucuri River

Morning. Early departure for the Blue Lake Cave, 21 km away. Book the first or second slot: sunlight enters through the cave mouth in the morning, and that is what lights up the blue of the lake. The visit takes about 1 hour 20 minutes, with roughly 300 steps down and back up. Closed shoes are mandatory.

Afternoon. The Sucuri River is about 19 km from the center, in the same direction as the cave. Have lunch at the attraction’s farm, or arrive with your afternoon slot already booked. The snorkel lasts about 1 hour in the water, in one of the clearest rivers in the region, with a return by boat or on foot. Back to the center in the late afternoon.

Driving for the day: about 40 km in total, all in the same direction.

If it rains: the cave goes ahead. If the Sucuri is suspended because of cloudy water, swap it for São Miguel Cave, 17 km away, a dry cave with a walkway, and rebook the Sucuri for the afternoon of day 3.

Day 2: Rio da Prata and Buraco das Araras, in Jardim

Morning. Leave around 7 am for Jardim, about 50 km to the south. The Rio da Prata is the longest river snorkel in the region: a forest trail to the spring, a practice session and about 2 hours drifting down the river, with bigger fish and more of them than in the Sucuri. Lunch at the farm, usually included or optional in the package.

Afternoon. Buraco das Araras is a few kilometers from the Rio da Prata. It is a sinkhole more than 100 meters across where red-and-green macaws nest in the walls. The visit is an easy trail around the rim, with lookouts, of about 1 hour 20 minutes. The best time is late afternoon, when the macaws return. Back to the center in the early evening.

Driving for the day: about 110 km round trip, in a single direction.

If it rains: the Rio da Prata may be suspended. Buraco das Araras runs in light rain. Lagoa Misteriosa, also in Jardim (open only from April to October), is a sinkhole of blue water that clouds less than the rivers and serves as a substitute for the snorkel. Ask the agency to reorganize the day among the three.

Day 3: waterfall or second snorkel, and departure

The third day depends on when you leave.

If you leave in the evening or the next day. Morning at Estância Mimosa, 25 km away: an easy trail past several waterfalls and swimming holes, about 4 hours with lunch at the farm. Afternoon at Nascente Azul, 32 km away in the same direction, for a second, short snorkel in a spring of intense blue. Or, if you would rather rest, an afternoon at Praia da Figueira, 16 km away.

If you leave after lunch to catch a flight from Campo Grande. Do only the morning: Estância Mimosa, or river tubing on the Formoso River, which is short and close to the center. Leave Bonito by 1 pm to reach Campo Grande with time to spare.

If it rains: waterfalls run in the rain, as long as there is no storm. Nascente Azul may be suspended; swap it for Aquário Natural, 8 km away, which usually keeps its visibility longer.

Adjustment if you arrive and leave within the 3 days

If you arrive from Campo Grande on the morning of day 1 and leave on the afternoon of day 3, you effectively have a day and a half of tours. Cut the Jardim day. Keep: the afternoon of day 1 at the Municipal River Beach; a full day 2 with the Blue Lake Cave and the Sucuri River; the morning of day 3 at Estância Mimosa or Aquário Natural, and the road after lunch.

Without a car

This itinerary was designed to work with agency transport. Each day has a single direction, so the agency charges one transfer per day, not two. Ask for quotes like this: “transport for the Blue Lake Cave and the Sucuri on the same day”, “transport for the Jardim day”. With a car rented in Campo Grande, you gain freedom over timing and can reach Buraco das Araras earlier or stay longer at Nascente Azul. The roads to the attractions are dirt and call for low speed, especially after rain.

How much it costs

Reference prices quoted by agencies in September 2026, in Brazilian reais (BRL): the five main tours in this itinerary (Blue Lake Cave, Sucuri, Rio da Prata, Buraco das Araras and Estância Mimosa) add up, in tickets alone, to an amount that varies with the season and is the same at every agency. Add transport per day, lunches at the farms when not included, four nights of accommodation and the journey from Campo Grande. Where to save without losing the essentials: swap Nascente Azul on day 3 for the Municipal River Beach, book transport per day instead of per tour, and have lunch in town on days when the tour ends before noon.

What to bring

Swimwear under your clothes from the morning, a towel, closed shoes that can get wet (they work for the cave and the farms), flip-flops for afterwards, sunscreen to use only out of the water, insect repellent for the trails, a water bottle, photo ID and your voucher, printed or on your phone. Masks and snorkels are provided on the river tours. A dry change of clothes in the car or van makes a difference at the end of the afternoon.

What this itinerary leaves out

Boca da Onça (Bodoquena, full day), the Anhumas Abyss (requires a test the day before and a place booked in advance) and any rest day.
