Things to Do in Bonito, Brazil: Tours by Type of Experience

Bonito, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul in Brazil’s Center-West, has around 30 registered tours, and the right question is not “what is there” but “what makes sense for my time and my group”. What to prioritize on a first visit

If you have three or four days, this is the combination that gives you the best sense of the region:

1. One river snorkel. This is the experience that defines Bonito: what Brazilians call flutuação, literally “floating”, means drifting down a river of transparent water with a mask and snorkel, watching fish and aquatic plants. The Sucuri River is the closest to town and one of the clearest; the Rio da Prata is the longest and lies in Jardim, 50 km away.
2. The Blue Lake Cave. The postcard of Bonito, a short tour with no contact with the water. Worth it for the blue of the lake and because it is the tour that works best in any weather.
3. A waterfall or a river beach. For a change of scenery and a restful afternoon.

Snorkeling in crystal-clear rivers

River snorkeling here is a guided tour: you get a life vest and a wetsuit, practice in a pool or at the spring, then float downstream and let the current do the work. You do not need to be a strong swimmer, but you do need to be comfortable with your face in the water.

Bonito’s rivers differ in distance, duration and current. The Sucuri and Nascente Azul are short and very clear; the Rio da Prata is long and has more large fish; Aquário Natural is the gentlest and the best choice for children. The full comparison is in snorkeling in Bonito.

Caves and caverns

The Serra da Bodoquena is a limestone plateau, and the caves are the consequence. The Blue Lake Cave is the one not to miss: a descent of about 300 steps to a lake of saturated blue. São Miguel Cave is a dry cave with a suspended walkway, for anyone who wants an option without a long stairway. Both lie in the same direction from the town center and can be done on the same day.

Waterfalls and trails

The waterfalls sit on private farms with forest trails and natural pools for swimming. Boca da Onça, in Bodoquena, is the tallest (a 156-meter drop) and the one that demands the most: a full day, a long trail and a stairway on the way back. Adventure: rappelling, river tubing and tree-top courses

The best-known adventure tour is the Anhumas Abyss: a 72-meter rappel down to a lake inside a cave, followed by snorkeling or scuba diving. It requires a rappel test the day before and a booking well in advance. With kids

Bonito works well with children from about 5 or 6, once they can handle a short trail and cold water. The river beaches have no minimum age and are the best starting point. Aquário Natural is the gentlest river snorkel. The Blue Lake Cave has a minimum age of 5, as stated by the agencies, because of the steps.

At night

Bonito is a small town and tours start early, so evenings are quiet. The most reliable evening activity is Projeto Jiboia, a presentation about snakes in the town center. Beyond that, there is the main square, restaurants and ice cream parlors. Details in Bonito at night.

In and around town

Not everything requires a drive. The Municipal River Beach is 7 km from the center, on the Formoso River, and is the cheapest tour in town. Praia da Figueira has a lake full of fish and full-day facilities. Ilha do Padre is an island in the Formoso River with small falls and a camping area.

What to combine on the same day

The rule is to group by direction. Heading south in the morning and north in the afternoon wastes two hours on dirt roads.

What needs advance booking

Every tour in Bonito is booked through a travel agency under the town’s single-voucher system: no attraction sells tickets at the gate, and the ticket price is the same at every agency. What differs is transport and service. Three tours sell out first:

• Anhumas Abyss: limited places per day and a rappel test the day before. Book weeks ahead, at any time of year.
• Rio da Prata: the most sought-after river snorkel. In July and on Brazilian holidays, it sells out.
• Blue Lake Cave: groups have fixed time slots; the morning slots, with the best light, go first.

River beaches, Aquário Natural and Projeto Jiboia rarely sell out and can be decided once you are in town.
