Bonito Airport (BYO): Flights, Distance and Getting into Town

Bonito, Brazil has its own airport, Aeroporto Regional de Bonito (code BYO), about 13 km from the center. Flight service, however, is limited and changes by season. Historically, commercial flights come from São Paulo, with more frequency in July and on Brazilian holidays, and in some periods the route has no service at all. Before planning your trip around it, check the airlines’ websites for a flight on your date.

When it exists, the direct flight is the fastest way in: you land and are in the center in about 20 minutes, without the 3 to 4 hours by car (or 4 to 5 by transfer) from Campo Grande.

Where the airport is and what it is like

The airport sits in the rural area of Bonito, about 13 km from the center, with highway access. It is small: a simple terminal, without the range of services of a big-city airport. Do not count on a food court, several rental counters or public transport outside. Whatever you need (transfer, car, taxi) should be arranged before you land.

Which flights serve Bonito?

This is the part that changes most. Over the years, different airlines have served Bonito under different arrangements: scheduled flights on certain days of the week, seasonal flights concentrated in July and holidays, and periods with no service at all. For that reason this guide does not list airlines or timetables as fixed facts.

What can be said with confidence:

• The most common origin, historically, is São Paulo.
• Service tends to be greater in high season (July, long holiday weekends, year-end).
• Flights, when they exist, usually run on only a few days a week, which limits your choice of dates.
• Fares tend to be higher than to Campo Grande, because there is less competition.

Check directly on airline websites and flight search engines, using the code BYO as the destination. If the search returns nothing for your date, the route is probably not operating in that period.

Getting from the airport to the center of Bonito

There is no regular local bus linking the airport to town. The options:

Agency or guesthouse transfer

The most common choice. Tour agencies and several pousadas (Brazilian guesthouses) offer airport pickup timed to your flight. Arrange it when you book your lodging or tours. Taxi or private driver

There are taxi drivers and private drivers in Bonito who serve the airport, generally on request. Because traffic is light, do not expect a taxi rank outside: arrange it beforehand by phone or WhatsApp through your guesthouse or agency. If the guesthouse offers pickup, it is usually the smoothest solution, because the timing is already aligned with check-in.

Rental car

If you plan to use a car for the tours, ideally pick it up at the airport. Rental availability in Bonito varies, and not every company delivers at the airport. Book in advance and confirm the delivery point. The drive to the center is straightforward and paved.

Alternative: flying to Campo Grande (CGR)

For most of the year, the practical route is Campo Grande International Airport, about 300 km from Bonito. It receives daily flights from São Paulo, Brasília, Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba and other Brazilian cities, generally at lower fares than Bonito. From there:

• Shared transfer: several departures a day timed to flights, 4 to 5 hours, priced per person.
• Private transfer: priced per vehicle, at your flight time.
• Rental car: 3 to 4 hours on paved highways.
• Bus: cheaper, leaving from Campo Grande’s bus station, with few departures.

What the direct flight changes in your itinerary

Arriving through Bonito airport gives you tour time back. A morning landing lets you fit in a river beach or a cave in the afternoon of the same day, and a late-afternoon departure leaves room for a short tour on the morning you leave. Checklist before you buy

1. Search for flights to BYO on your date. If there are none, search for CGR.
2. Compare the total: fare to BYO versus fare to CGR plus the round-trip transfer.
3. If you choose BYO, arrange the airport–center transport with your guesthouse or agency before you travel.
4. If you choose CGR, pick flights that land by early afternoon and depart after midday, so you do not lose whole days on the road.
