Bonito on a Rainy Day: Alternatives and How Rebooking Works

Rain in Bonito, Brazil, has one specific effect: it clouds the water. The rivers that made the town famous are transparent because the limestone of the Serra da Bodoquena filters and settles the water, but heavy rain at the headwaters brings sediment and visibility drops for a day or more. Rain does not close Bonito. It closes some tours and leaves others the same or better.

What to do on a rainy day

Caves

The Blue Lake Cave is the wildcard of any itinerary. It does not depend on river water, runs in the rain and, between November and February, has the best light of the year on the lake. Anhumas Abyss

If you have a booking and have done the test, the Anhumas Abyss goes ahead in the rain. The rappel is through a crack and the lake is inside the cave. Good news for anyone who booked the most expensive tour of the trip.

Waterfalls in light rain

Estância Mimosa, Parque das Cachoeiras and Boca da Onça keep their trails open in light rain, and the falls run stronger. The water in the pools may cloud, but the scenery makes up for it. Bring a rain jacket and shoes with grip. Only a storm closes them.

Town and evening

How rebooking works

The single-voucher system means all communication goes through the agency. In practice:

1. Early in the morning, the attraction assesses the water and tells the agencies whether it will operate. This usually happens between 6 and 7 am.
2. The agency tells you, by WhatsApp or at reception, and proposes alternatives: rebook for another day of your trip, swap for another tour or, if nothing fits, a refund according to the attraction’s policy.
3. You decide based on how many days you have left. If the trip is short, swapping for a cave or a waterfall is better than waiting.

Agencies do this every day in the rainy season and are good at it. What helps is having the agency’s contact saved, replying quickly and having an idea in advance of what you would accept as a swap. Refund rules are set by each attraction; ask when booking.

An itinerary with margin for rain

If you are going between December and March, build the itinerary like this:

• Main snorkels in the first days. The Sucuri River and the Rio da Prata on days 1 and 2, leaving days free to rebook.
• Blue Lake Cave with no fixed day, or booked on a day you can swap. It is the wildcard.
• Last day open, to absorb a rebooked tour.
• Four days or more. With two or three, the chance of losing a snorkel with no room to rebook is real.

When it rains in Bonito

The rainy season runs from December to March, with heavy downpours usually in the afternoon. The dry season runs from May to September and is when the rivers are at their clearest. April, October and November are transition months, with occasional rain. The important detail is that the rain that clouds a river may have fallen at the headwaters, kilometers away, while the sun shines in town. What to bring for the rainy season

A rain jacket or windbreaker, closed shoes with grip for wet trails, a plastic bag for your phone, an extra change of clothes in the car, and insect repellent for after the rain, when the mosquitoes come out.
