Getting to Bonito, Brazil from Abroad: Flights and Transfers

Bonito has no international airport and no direct international road link. Every foreign visitor arrives the same way: an international flight into one of Brazil’s gateway cities, a domestic flight to Campo Grande, the capital of Mato Grosso do Sul, and then about 300 km by road. This page walks through each leg, the alternatives and how to combine the trip with the Pantanal or Iguazu Falls.

Allow a full day of travel each way from Europe or North America, and most of a day from other South American capitals.

Leg 1: international flight to Brazil

São Paulo–Guarulhos (GRU) is the main gateway and the one with the most onward connections to Campo Grande. Most long-haul flights from Europe, North America, the Middle East and the rest of South America land here.

Rio de Janeiro–Galeão (GIG) also has connections to Campo Grande, usually with a stop. If your itinerary starts in Rio, it can still work; if you are choosing an airport purely for Bonito, choose São Paulo.

Brasília (BSB) has daily flights to Campo Grande and a growing number of international routes, mostly within South America.

One detail matters when booking: São Paulo has three airports. Long-haul flights use Guarulhos (GRU); many domestic flights leave from Congonhas (CGH) or Campinas–Viracopos (VCP). A same-airport connection at GRU is far simpler than crossing the city, which can take two hours in traffic. If you must change airports, leave at least four to five hours.

Leg 2: domestic flight to Campo Grande (CGR)

Campo Grande International Airport (CGR) is the regional hub. LATAM, GOL and Azul fly there daily from São Paulo (GRU, CGH and VCP) and Brasília (BSB), with flights of roughly two hours from São Paulo. There are also connections through other hubs, but São Paulo is the direct one.

Book the domestic leg on the same ticket as the international flight when you can. It protects the connection if the long-haul flight is delayed and lets you check bags through. If you buy it separately, leave a generous buffer at GRU: you will clear immigration, collect bags, clear customs and check in again.

Aim to land in Campo Grande by early afternoon. That leaves time for the road leg on the same day.

Leg 3: Campo Grande to Bonito

The distance is about 300 km on a paved two-lane highway through farmland. There are four ways to cover it.

Scheduled shared transfer

This is the default for foreign visitors without a car. Transfer companies run vans between Campo Grande airport and hotels in Bonito at fixed departure times, timed loosely to the main flights. The ride takes four to five hours including a rest stop, and the van drops you at your accommodation.

Book in advance, online or through your Bonito agency, and give your flight number; some operators will wait for a delayed flight if they know about it. Reference price in September 2026: roughly R$ 140 to 160 per person each way, depending on the operator and season. Prices change; confirm when booking.

Private transfer

A car and driver for your group, leaving whenever you land. It costs several times the shared fare but makes sense for families or groups of four or more, or for late arrivals when no shared van remains. Bonito agencies and hotels arrange it.

Rental car

All major rental companies operate at Campo Grande airport. The drive is straightforward in daylight: paved the whole way, no tolls on the usual route at the time of our check, fuel stations in the larger towns. Plan three to four hours without stops. Avoid driving after dark: cattle, capybaras and other animals cross the road at night and the highway is unlit. Intercity bus

Regular buses connect Campo Grande and Bonito in five to six hours. They leave from the city bus terminal (rodoviária), not the airport, so you need a taxi or ride-hailing car first. It is the cheapest option and the slowest; useful if you are already in Campo Grande with time to spare.

Bonito’s own airport (BYO)

Bonito has a small regional airport about 13 km from the center. It has received scheduled domestic flights in some periods, mostly from São Paulo, often only a few days a week and sometimes only in high season. Airlines have added and dropped the route more than once.

Treat it as a bonus, not a plan. Check current schedules with LATAM, GOL and Azul when you book; if a flight exists on your dates it saves half a day each way. Transfers from BYO to hotels take about 20 minutes and are arranged by agencies and hotels.

Combining Bonito with the Pantanal

The southern Pantanal lies between Campo Grande and Bonito, which makes the combination efficient. Lodges around Miranda and Aquidauana, and along the Estrada Parque near Passo do Lontra, are reached by paved highway from Campo Grande in two to three hours; from those lodges to Bonito is another two to three hours on paved road via Bodoquena or Jardim.

A common loop: land in Campo Grande, two nights in the Pantanal, three or four nights in Bonito, return to Campo Grande. Pantanal lodges arrange transfers from Campo Grande airport and onward to Bonito, and Bonito agencies sell the reverse. Corumbá, further west, is a longer detour and better suited to a separate Pantanal trip.

Combining Bonito with Iguazu Falls

Iguazu Falls (Foz do Iguaçu) is roughly 700 km from Bonito by road, through the south of Mato Grosso do Sul and the west of Paraná. Driving takes 10 to 12 hours; buses run with connections in Dourados or Campo Grande and take longer. By air the route is Foz do Iguaçu (IGU) to São Paulo and then to Campo Grande, followed by the road transfer, a full day as well.

If both are on your list, put them at opposite ends of the trip: for example, fly into Rio or São Paulo, go to Iguazu, cross by road to Bonito, then leave through Campo Grande. Doing Iguazu as a side trip from Bonito and coming back is rarely worth the two travel days.

Practical notes

Timing. Tours in Bonito start early. Arrive the evening before your first tour, not the morning of.
Leaving. For a morning flight out of Campo Grande, travel the afternoon before and sleep near the airport.
