Mimoso Cave Snorkeling (Gruta do Mimoso)

Mimoso Cave (Gruta do Mimoso) is a partly flooded limestone cave where the visit takes place in the water. You climb down a staircase to an underground lake and float among stalactites and columns through three chambers, with the guide lighting up the formations. It is the only snorkel in Bonito done in the dark, and one of the few with strictly controlled entry: groups of up to 10 people and a limited number of descents per day.

It is about 30 km from the town center, on a private farm, and takes half a day.

What the tour is like

The group is welcomed at the farmhouse, puts on wetsuit, vest and a helmet with a headlamp, and listens to the safety briefing. The trail to the cave is about 300 meters through the forest.

At the cave mouth the descent begins: 78 steps on a fixed staircase, down to the platform where you enter the lake. The water is cold, still and of a clarity that only shows up under the lamp, because there is no natural light. The snorkel passes through the cave’s chambers, past stalactites reaching almost 8 meters and stretches where the ceiling comes close to the water. The guide leads the group in single file, points out the formations and keeps track of time.

You climb back up the same steps, in a wet wetsuit. The effort is moderate; what takes it out of you is the staircase, not the snorkel.

The cave also hosts scuba diving, sold as a separate tour and restricted to certified divers. For the ordinary visitor, the snorkel already covers the three chambers and the main formations.

Best season and time of day

The tour depends on the water level in the cave. Between April and October operation is more regular and visibility better. Heavy summer rain can cloud the lake or raise it enough to suspend descents; prolonged drought can lower the level too far. Since there is no natural light, the time of day makes no difference to the experience: pick whatever fits your itinerary best.

Price

Tickets are sold by Bonito’s licensed agencies under the single-voucher system, at the same price everywhere. The reference price, in Brazilian reais (BRL), is in the “At a glance” box on this page with the date it was checked. It is one of the more expensive tours in its category, justified by the small group and the equipment. Transport is quoted separately.

Is it worth it?

Yes, for anyone who has already done the river snorkels and wants something different, and for cave lovers who do not mind the dark and cold water. It pairs well with the Blue Lake Cave on the same trip: one is sightseeing, the other is immersion. If you want to snorkel in a sinkhole in daylight, there is Lagoa Misteriosa, in Jardim; if you want a rappel and a cave snorkel, the Anhumas Abyss, at a much higher price and physical demand.
