Blue Lake Cave (Gruta do Lago Azul)

The Blue Lake Cave, Gruta do Lago Azul in Portuguese, is the image most people picture when they hear “Bonito”. It is a limestone cave with a lake at the bottom, more than 80 meters below the entrance, whose water is so saturated a blue that it looks lit from within. It is not. The color comes from sunlight entering the opening and from the depth of the lake, which exceeds 80 meters and has never been fully explored.

The tour is short and does not involve water: you walk, climb down, look and climb back up. That makes it an easy fit for any itinerary, including rainy days and travelers who cannot or do not want to swim.

What the tour is like

The visit starts at the reception, where the group gets helmets and the guide explains the rules. From there a short forest trail of about 200 meters leads to the cave mouth.

The descent is the part that needs attention: roughly 300 uneven steps carved into the rock, with a handrail along part of the way. The guide sets the pace and stops to explain how the cave formed, the speleothems and the fossils found in the lake.

At the bottom, the group stands on a platform a few meters from the water. This is photo time. Viewing time is limited so that groups do not pile up.

You go back up the same way. For most people it is fine; for anyone with knee problems or reduced mobility, it is the section to think about before booking.

Best time of day and season

The blue depends on light. The lake is most intense when the sun shines through the cave mouth, which happens in the morning. In December and January the sun angle helps even more. The cave is still beautiful year-round, and in the afternoon the blue is visible, just less bright.

Is it worth it?

Yes, especially on a first trip to Bonito. It is the town’s most iconic tour and one of the few that do not depend on river levels or weather. If you are short on days, pair the cave with a river beach or the Sucuri River on the same day: all three are less than 25 km from town.
