Aquário Natural Spring Snorkeling

Aquário Natural (“Natural Aquarium”) is Bonito’s entry-level river snorkel. The route is short, the current is weak and the spring is 8 km from the town center, which makes it the easiest water tour to fit into any itinerary. Visitors who arrive nervous about snorkeling, or with small children, usually start here.

The spring is the source of the Baía Bonita River, a tributary of the Formoso. The water emerges from the ground already crystal clear, and the float of about 800 meters ends where it meets the Formoso River, where the color changes and visibility drops a little.

What the tour is like

After check-in and changing, the group collects wetsuit, vest, mask and snorkel and does a practice session in a pool. The guide teaches you to breathe through the snorkel, the floating position and the main rule: do not touch the bottom or the plants.

The float starts at the spring itself, a shallow lagoon where the water wells up between sandbanks and aquatic vegetation. It is the stretch with the most fish: schools of piraputanga and curimbatá hang motionless in front of your mask. From there the river picks up a little current and carries the group through riverside forest to the confluence with the Formoso, always with a support boat alongside.

Time in the water is about 40 minutes. Adding the practice session, transfers within the property and showers, allow 2.5 hours. Afterwards the facilities work as a river park: restaurant, pool, rest area and changing rooms.

Aquário Natural or Sucuri River?

It is the most common question, because both are short snorkels near town. The Sucuri River has even clearer water and a slightly longer route, with a boat stretch; Aquário Natural is shallower, more sheltered and has river-park facilities to stay on afterwards. For a family with small children, or for a half-day tour with no logistics, Aquário Natural wins. For anyone prioritizing the snorkel experience itself, the Sucuri or Rio da Prata deliver more.

Best season and time of day

The water is spring-fed and stays clear year-round, but heavy summer rain can cloud the final stretch, near the Formoso. Between May and September visibility is more stable. Is it worth it?

Yes, as a first snorkel, as a tour with children and as a half-day option to round off a day. It is not worth it as the only snorkel of the trip for anyone with four days or more: in that case, save the money for a longer tour and use Aquário Natural as a supplement. In the 4-day itinerary it fits well on the afternoon you arrive or the morning you leave.
