Sucuri River Snorkeling (Rio Sucuri)

The Sucuri River (Rio Sucuri) is the clearest river snorkel in Bonito, and that is not agency hype. The spring rises from a limestone aquifer, which keeps the water free of suspended particles and gives it the tens-of-meters visibility you see in the photos. The tour is short, sits 19 km from the town center and fits in half a day, which makes it the natural choice for your first “flutuação”, the guided river float that is Bonito’s signature activity.

What the tour is like

Reception is at Fazenda São Geraldo, a working farm. Groups of up to eight people collect wetsuit, vest, mask and snorkel, get a briefing and follow a short trail to a dock at the spring. There the guide runs a mask check and shows you how to position your body in the water.

The float follows the current for about 1.8 km. Depth ranges from just over one meter to around four, and the scenery is dominated by green aquatic plants and white sand with springs bubbling up through it. The most common fish are piraputanga, dourado, curimbatá and armored catfish, which pass within a meter of your mask because they are used to people. There are no rapids and the effort is minimal: the guide tells you when to hold still, the support boat follows the group, and anyone who gets tired can climb aboard.

The route ends at a dock, and the return to reception is by boat, heading upriver with the engine off for part of the way. The activity itself takes about 1.5 hours. With check-in, changing and showers, allow 2.5 hours.

At the base there is a restaurant (charged separately), a pool, hammocks, changing rooms and showers. Many people have lunch here before moving on to another tour in the same area.

Rules in the water

The rules apply to every river snorkel in the region, and here they are enforced strictly. Entering the water with sunscreen or insect repellent on your skin is prohibited, which is why you shower first. Touching fish, plants or the bottom is prohibited, and so is standing on the sand: it stirs up sediment and spoils visibility for everyone. The vest is mandatory, and the guide leads the line from start to finish.

Best season and time of day

The Sucuri is the river least affected by rain, because the spring is close by and the water does not travel far. Even so, heavy rain will cloud any river in the region for a day or two. Tickets are sold exclusively through licensed agencies at the same price everywhere, under Bonito’s single-voucher booking system. Children aged 6 to 11 pay less in low season; in high season there is usually a single rate.

How it compares to Rio da Prata

It is the inevitable comparison. Rio da Prata is longer (over 2 km in the water), has more large fish, includes lunch and sits in Jardim, 50 km away, taking up the whole day. The Sucuri is clearer, shorter and closer. With small children, little time or a first-ever river snorkel, the Sucuri is the safer choice. With time for both, do the Sucuri first: it works as a warm-up for the Prata.

Is it worth it?

Yes, and it is the tour we usually recommend for anyone doing their first river snorkel. It costs less than the Prata, takes less time and never disappoints on visibility. The limitation is length: if you have already floated other rivers in the region, it may feel short.
