Bonito Municipal River Beach (Balneário Municipal)

The Balneário Municipal, Bonito’s municipal river beach, is a stretch of about 300 meters of the Formoso River, 7 km from the town center, surrounded by lawn, trees and kiosks. The water is clear enough to see the bottom and the schools of piraputanga that swim between the legs of anyone who wades in. It is the cheapest and simplest outing in town: no guide, no departure time, no mandatory equipment. You arrive, show your voucher and stay all day if you like.

A word on the term: a “balneário” in Brazil is a day-use bathing spot, here a river beach with club-style facilities rather than a sandy ocean beach.

What it is like

There is no “tour” in the sense of the other attractions. The place works like a river club: entry with voucher, changing rooms, showers, lockers, a restaurant, snack bars, sand courts, a playground and barbecue grills for rent. The bank has areas of grass and sand, and the river has shallow stretches and stretches over two meters deep, with a rope and platforms.

The attraction is the water. At this point the Formoso River has enough visibility to see the rocky bottom and the fish, which approach anyone who gets in because they are used to people. With a mask and snorkel (your own or rented on site), the effect is like a stationary river snorkel, with no guide and no strong current. There are also stretches of gentle rapids and a small drop where most people gather.

Capuchin monkeys often show up in the trees along the bank, and the lawn draws families who spend the whole day with food from home.

Rules

Even without a guide, the rules of Bonito’s rivers apply: no sunscreen or insect repellent on your skin in the water (apply only after your last swim), no feeding or touching the fish, no glass in the river area. Lifeguards are on duty. Weak swimmers should wear a vest, rented on site or brought from home, because there are deep stretches and current.

Best season and time of day

It is open year-round. In the dry season the water is clearer; in the rainy months it can turn murky for a day or two after storms, but since the ticket is cheap and there is no time slot, the risk is small. The beach usually closes one day a week for maintenance; confirm with the agency when buying.

Timing matters in high season: in July (Brazilian winter school holidays), on long weekends and over the year-end holidays, the place fills up from mid-morning. Arrive at 8am, when it opens, or go after 3pm for emptier water.

Price

The reference price, in Brazilian reais (BRL), is in the info box on this page with the date it was checked. It is a fraction of the cost of a river snorkel and covers the whole day. Snorkel, vest and barbecue rentals are charged separately. As with every attraction in Bonito, tickets are sold by licensed agencies at the same price everywhere, under the single-voucher system; there is no ticket office at the gate.

Is it worth it?

It depends on how many days you have. With two or three days, no: your time is better spent on the Sucuri River and the Blue Lake Cave. With four days or more, yes, for three reasons: it is the cheapest rest day of the trip, it is the best place in the region for small children, and it fills the afternoon for anyone arriving or leaving the same day. It is also the natural option if you are visiting Bonito without a car, since it is so close to town.
