Bonito in July: Weather, Prices, Crowds and How to Plan

July is the busiest month in Bonito, Brazil. It brings two good things and two bad ones. The good: it is the dry season, with transparent water in the rivers and little chance of rain cancellations, and the days are pleasant. The bad: Brazilian school holidays, which fill up the tours and push up voucher and hotel prices, and cold fronts that make some mornings chilly. July is winter in Brazil. Plan ahead and you get the best of the month.

Weather in July

Cold fronts usually last only a few days. In between, the weather is dry and sunny, with comfortable afternoons.

Prices and crowds

July is high season. Tour vouchers (in Bonito, every tour is booked in advance through a licensed agency, which issues a voucher at a fixed price) follow the high-season rate, which on several tours is about 20% to 25% more than in low season (at the Blue Lake Cave, the difference reaches 50%). Accommodation rises by a similar amount, and the most popular guesthouses fill up early. Bonito’s rental car fleet is small and sells out; if you plan to drive, book ahead or pick up your car in Campo Grande, the state capital.

What to book ahead (and when)

In July, without a booking there are no spots on the main tours. The order:

1. Flights and accommodation, 90 to 180 days ahead.
2. The most sought-after tours, 60 to 90 days ahead: Rio da Prata, the Blue Lake Cave, the Anhumas Abyss and Nascente Azul. Pay the Environmental Conservation Fee, Bonito’s municipal fee per day of tours, at the same time.
3. Car or transfers, 30 to 60 days ahead.
4. Other tours, about 30 days ahead.
5. Dinners at popular restaurants, 7 to 15 days ahead.

How to plan your days in the cold

• River snorkeling in the late morning. The water is the same, but the air has warmed up by the time you get out of the river.
• Caves early. The Blue Lake Cave involves no swimming and works the same at any temperature.
• Waterfalls in the afternoon. On cold-front days, leave trails with swimming stops for after lunch.
• A large towel and a jacket in your daypack. The wind when you get out of the water is the coldest moment of the day.

What makes July special

• Lagoa Misteriosa is open. Snorkeling at Lagoa Misteriosa only runs from April to October.
• Active macaws. From July to November, Buraco das Araras sees more activity from the birds.
• The Pantanal in the dry season. From May to September, animals gather near the water and the roads are in better shape. July is a good month to add the Pantanal from Bonito.

July with kids

July is family month. With children aged 4 to 6, swap Rio da Prata for the Sucuri River or Nascente Azul, which accept children from age 4. Children’s wetsuits come in limited sizes and demand is high during the holidays: give the age and size when booking. See Bonito with kids.

Common mistakes in July

• Waiting to rent a car on arrival. Bonito’s fleet is small and sells out during the holidays.
• Booking your main tour on the last day. Even in the dry season, heavy rain can cloud the river; leave room to reschedule.
• Forgetting a jacket. Travelers counting on the famous heat of Mato Grosso do Sul end up cold on cold-front mornings.
• Getting the time zone wrong. Mato Grosso do Sul is 1 hour behind Brasília time. Check that your flight and voucher times are in local time.
• Booking a package without reading the cancellation policy. In July, free-cancellation deadlines are longer.

July or another month?

If school holidays do not fix your dates, June and August offer the same dry weather and the same transparent water, with cheaper vouchers and fewer people. May and September are good options too.
