São Miguel Cave (Gruta de São Miguel)

São Miguel Cave (Gruta de São Miguel) is Bonito’s dry cave. There is no lake and no blue water; what you see are stalactites, stalagmites, columns and limestone curtains in a lit chamber, after a walk along a walkway suspended in the forest. It is 17 km from the town center, on the same road out as the Blue Lake Cave, and the visit is easy enough for children and older people. It usually enters an itinerary as the second cave, as a rainy-day option or as a half-day filler.

What the tour is like

Reception is at a farm with a snack bar and parking. Groups of up to 15 people are given helmets and follow the guide along a walkway suspended about five meters above the ground, roughly 200 meters to the first lookout and a further stretch to the second, already at the cave mouth. The walkway crosses hillside forest with macaws, toucans and, with luck, monkeys in the trees.

Inside the cave the floor is uneven and there are low-ceiling stretches, but the walk is short. Artificial lighting picks out the speleothems, and the guide hands out flashlights for the dark corners. What catches the eye are the curtain formations and the columns where stalactites and stalagmites have met. You return along the same walkway. All told, about 1h20 from arrival to departure.

Who it is for

It is a sightseeing tour, with no real effort and no water. It works well for families with children of any age and grandparents, for anyone who does not want to get in a river that day, and for cave lovers who have already done the Blue Lake Cave. It does not work for anyone with only two days in Bonito who has to choose: in that case, your time is better spent at the Blue Lake Cave, which is more striking.

Best season and time of day

It runs year-round and does not depend on rain, sunlight or river levels, which makes it one of the few Bonito tours with no “best season”. Very heavy rain can close the walkway for safety, but that is rare. Any time of day works; morning groups tend to be smaller.

Price

The reference price, in Brazilian reais (BRL), is in the info box on this page with the date it was checked. It is one of the lowest among Bonito’s attractions, and children pay a token amount. Transport is quoted separately. Tickets are bought through a licensed agency at the same price everywhere, under Bonito’s single-voucher system.

Is it worth it?

Yes, for what it is. It is cheap, short and different from the river snorkels, and the forest walkway is lovely in its own right. It is not a headline tour and should not be anyone’s reason to travel to Bonito, but it is the best way to use a free half day or a rainy morning, and it pairs with the Municipal River Beach or the Sucuri River for the other half of the day, since all of them are less than 20 km from town.
