Can You Visit Bonito Without a Tour Agency? What Works and What Doesn't

The short answer has two parts. Without a package from a travel agency, yes: you can buy your flight, book your guesthouse, rent a car and plan the itinerary yourself. Without a licensed Bonito agency, almost nothing: since 1995, no attraction in the region can be visited without a voucher issued by a licensed agency based in town. The good news is that you can buy that voucher online, from home, at the same price from any agency.

Why tours require an agency

The voucher system controls how many people enter each attraction per day and per time slot. The voucher shows the tour, date, exact time and number of people. The agency checks availability in real time, issues the document and you show it at the gate. There are no ticket booths at the attractions.

It is not a middleman fee: the tour price is set by the attraction and is the same at every agency. What differs is what comes with it, such as transfers, packages and customer service.

What you can do on your own

Without any agency, you can:

• Plan and buy the logistics. Flights, accommodation, rental cars and restaurants don’t depend on an agency. See getting to Bonito from abroad.

• Drive to the attractions. With your own or a rental car, you skip the agency transfer and go on your own schedule. You only need the voucher on arrival.

What needs a voucher, even if it’s simple

Many people assume the cheapest tours or those closest to town are free entry. They are not:

• Municipal River Beach. Although run by the town, it requires a voucher for tourists, with 700 daily spots. 2026 reference: R$ 70 to R$ 98 per adult. It rarely sells out outside holidays, so you can buy it the day before. See the Municipal River Beach.
• Other river beaches, such as Balneário do Sol, Praia da Figueira and Eco Park Porto da Ilha, also work with vouchers.
• Projeto Jiboia. The evening talk about snakes, downtown, costs about R$ 80 in 2026 and is also sold through agencies. You can walk there, but not without a voucher. See Projeto Jiboia.

These are the easiest tours to add at the last minute, but they still go through an agency.

How to book online with a licensed agency

The process is the same for every tour:

1. Choose tours and dates. Group them by direction: caves to the west, Jardim to the south, waterfalls to the north. The Bonito map helps.
2. Check availability. Send your list to the agency via WhatsApp or its website, with dates, number of people and children’s ages. WhatsApp is the standard channel in Brazil.
3. Pay the Environmental Conservation Fee (TCA). R$ 15 per person, per day with a tour, only on the official site turistapornatureza.com.br, before the voucher is issued. 4. Pay the agency for the tours and receive the digital voucher. International cards are generally accepted; Pix, Brazil’s instant payment system, requires a Brazilian bank account.
5. Save vouchers offline. At rural attractions, phone signal is often weak or nonexistent.

How to choose an agency

Since the tour price doesn’t change, compare everything else:

• Is the transfer included? In most official price lists, it isn’t. A R$ 470 tour can become R$ 600 per person with transport.
• Cancellation policy in writing. In high season, the penalty-free window can be 15 to 20 days. No-shows are usually charged in full.
• Rain rescheduling. The attraction decides whether a snorkeling tour runs; if it cancels, the agency reschedules or refunds. Ask how this works.
• One agency for everything. It schedules tours without clashes and reschedules the whole package if the weather turns. Ask for a package discount.
• Languages. Many agencies serve customers in English and Spanish; confirm before booking.

Be wary of offers of “direct tickets” or prices well below the official rate. Ask for the company details and confirm it is an agency based in Bonito.

Is a no-package trip worth it?

For most people, yes. Planning on your own gives you control over lodging, transport and pace, and tours cost the same as in a package. A package can make sense if you don’t want to deal with transfers or are traveling in high season with no time to plan. The right booking order

In high season (July, Brazilian holidays and year-end), the most sought-after tours, such as Rio da Prata, the Blue Lake Cave, the Anhumas Abyss and Nascente Azul, sell out weeks ahead. The sequence that works:

1. Flights and accommodation, 90 to 180 days ahead.
2. High-demand tours and TCA, 60 to 90 days ahead.
3. Car or transfers, 30 to 60 days ahead.
4. Other tours, about 30 days ahead.
