Accessible Bonito: Tours for Seniors and Travelers with Reduced Mobility

Bonito, Brazil is one of the best-prepared destinations in the country for older travelers and people with reduced mobility. Nascente Azul offers snorkeling with an amphibious wheelchair, ramps and a support vehicle; Buraco das Araras has a flat trail to its viewpoints; and river beaches such as the Municipal River Beach and Praia da Figueira have amphibious wheelchairs. What to avoid are tours with many steps or long trails, such as the Blue Lake Cave and Boca da Onça.

The one condition is to give notice. Attractions need to set aside equipment and a trained guide, so tell your agency about any needs when you book, not when you arrive. Many agencies handle requests in English over WhatsApp.

Attractions with accessible facilities

“Accessible” here means facilities for reduced mobility as reported by the attraction itself or by official accessible-tourism programs. Conditions change, so confirm with your agency what applies to your case.

Amphibious wheelchairs

These are wheelchairs designed to go into the water, so you do not need to walk over the riverbed. In Bonito they are available at Nascente Azul and at the river beaches listed above. Ask when booking whether the chair will be free at your time slot.

Good tours for over-60s

Even without mobility issues, travelers over 60 tend to enjoy short tours with little driving and no sustained effort:

• São Miguel Cave: a dry cave with a suspended walkway through the forest, about 1 h 20 min. The comfortable alternative to the Blue Lake Cave.
• Buraco das Araras: short, flat trail with red macaws, about 1 h 20 min.
• Nascente Azul: a short snorkel plus a river beach for the rest of the day, with the best accessibility in the region.
• Sucuri River and Aquario Natural: calm snorkeling close to town. At Sucuri a boat follows the group.
• Projeto Jiboia: an evening talk about snakes at 7 p.m., with no physical effort.

You do not need to be a strong swimmer to snorkel in Bonito: a life vest and wetsuit keep you afloat and the current does the work.

What to avoid or assess carefully

• Boca da Onça: a trail of about 4 km with many steps on the way back. Not recommended for older travelers.
• Lagoa Misteriosa: a 1.1 km trail and a long staircase down to the water.
• Estância Mimosa, Rio do Peixe and Parque das Cachoeiras: waterfall trails of 1.7 to 3.5 km. Fine if you walk well; assess case by case.
• Anhumas: the 72 m descent can be made on an electric platform, but the tour is long and the water is 18 °C (64 °F). Only by prior arrangement.

Pace and logistics

• One main tour a day, in the morning, with a free afternoon. Bonito works well this way.
• Group tours by area. Attractions are 6 to 72 km from town; less driving means less fatigue.

Health

Snorkeling and diving are restricted for pregnant women, people with heart conditions, people with epilepsy and anyone who has had recent surgery. Tell your agency before booking. Bonito has a hospital, the Hospital Darci João Bigaton; complex cases are transferred to Campo Grande, about 300 km away. Senior prices

Several attractions charge seniors a different price from adults, but rules are not uniform and sources sometimes disagree.
